MENS HOCKEY

A proud history… and a bright future

Our Men’s section has a long and rich history, with origins dating back to the early 1900s. For more than 100 years, we’ve been fielding men’s teams in Melbourne’s preeminent hockey leagues, amassing numerous titles and much success as a community club along the way.

Fast forward to today, our Men’s section at the newly rebadged Yarra Hockey Club remains committed to continuing this legacy. Comprising a mix of experienced club stalwarts, talented youth and overseas players, our Men’s section continues to offer teams for all levels of skill and interest – from high-level Vic League competitions, through to beginner and social hockey, and everything in between. We also have a separate and long-standing Master’s section at Yarra.

Our Men’s section welcomes players of all backgrounds, ages and abilities who share our passion for hockey. Whether you’re an experienced hockey player looking for a new challenge, or a new player keen to try the game for the first time, we have a team for you. Rest assured, you’ll be backed by an experienced coaching cohort at Yarra that are focused on development and a strong team ethos. You’ll also be joining a supportive and welcoming community at Yarra, which has revamped facilities and a renewed purpose to “enrich the lives of our community on and off the hockey field”.

2024 Summary

The Men’s section had a very successful 2024 Winter season.  Both Men’s teams in the Victoria League 2 and Victoria League 2 Reserves won their championships.  Both teams comprised largely of players 19 years old or younger alongside players with many years of seniors experience.  With continued development, continued experience and player depth, we are excited about their future potential.

As a result, both Men’s teams have been promoted to Hockey Victoria’s Men’s Victoria League 1 division.  Our goal is to return to where we were in 2019, the Hockey Victoria Men’s Premier League.

Our Men’s Pennant E team finished a respectable 5th.  They played admirably and just missed out on finals.  There was some unlucky injuries that did not help the team in the second half of the year.  There is excitement that this group can do one better in 2025.  The squad has a good mixed of senior experience and youth.

2025 Teams

Yarra has entered four Men’s teams in Hockey Victoria’s outdoor competitions for 2025, with games typically played on Saturdays and/or Sundays and Monday nights between April and September.

• Men’s Victoria League 1
• Men’s Victoria League 1 Reserves
• Men’s Pennant E
• Men’s Open (Monday Nights)

Training for 2025

Men’s section training is held twice a week at our home ground, at Cyril Cummins Reserve in Melbourne’s Bellfield:

• Tuesdays 7:30pm to 9:00pm; and
• Thursdays 7:00pm to 8:30pm.
